Nick Brown is the creator/designer of the NYX. In 1980 Nick moves from the United Kingdom to Friesland, The Netherlands. "If you are serious about making movies, you go to L.A., but if you are serious about building boats you need to be in Friesland, because that's where some of the best boats in the world are being built. In Friesland I can work with highly skilled and motivated craftsmen to get the results I want", he says.
Nick seems quite notorious in the Dutch boating scene. He has been working as a ships carpenter himself, so he has a sharp eye for every little detail and never compromises on quality. When the welders finish up for the day, he gets under the hull and checks every welded joint and connection. He points out, "Although I'm hiring the best guys, that doesn't mean I can sit back and relax, I strive for 100% perfection to every detail. Without that attitude I would not have been in this business for over 30 years."
Nick likes to be flexible and improve his designs during the build. This sometimes can get frustrating for the Dutch craftsmen that have to redo a part of their work, because Nick thinks it can be done better, or 'more sexy'...
"I can't build a ship like this from paper and stick to it", he says, "I'm very much inspired by modern architecture, army prototypes, sports cars, but also various science fiction movies. It has happened that after watching a movie I got a great idea of how a certain detail can make the ship even more exciting. The building crew sometimes grumble when I come in with another crazy idea, but they come around quickly and take it as a new challenge. They all see that the NYX is going to be different from anything that they have worked on before.
I like to see the NYX as 'Darth Vader's flagship'. Picture this ship, completely pitch black with bronze teinted windows, at night the control room will make you feel like you have been abducted by aliens. We will also introduce some features which you probably have not seen on a ship before.
There are too many uninspiring bathtubs floating around already. This is due to the fact that most shipbuilders design ships out of commercial interest only. When you start with putting in toilets and walk-in closets for every bedroom on the ship you will end up with a ship that will look like a bathtub, and worse: it will perform like one. For me that was one of the main reasons to start with the hull and get it right. After that, if you want to add another bedroom, we will adjust the length and the engines of the ship, the design of the hull stays intact, so every version of the NYX will be blazing fast and incredibly stable.
Based on this design we can customize the NYX's interior in every possible detail, but we will make no compromises to its beauty and performance. The NYX needs to fully live up to her name, The Goddess of the Night, a ship of exceptional power and beauty.
